Payippad chundan wins Kallada boat race

KOLLAM: The Payippad Chudan raced through the Muthiraparambu
-Karoothrakadavu course of River Kallada to emerge winner in the finals of the snake-boat category of the Kallada boat race on Tuesday. The Karichal Chundan came second.
Hundreds of people witnessed the close race in which eleven snake-boats took part. Karichal was the winner in this year’s Nehru Trophy Boat Race at Alappuzha. It had won the Kallada race last year.
Payippad was captioned by Rehumathulla and sponsored by the Kannetti Sangam Boat Club, Karunagapally. Karichal was captioned by Jiji Jacob and sponsored by Jesus Boat Club, Kollam. Chambakulam, Karuvatta, Karuvatta Srivinayakan, Anari, Jawahar Thayankari, Sri Ganesh, Cheruthana, Alapad and Ayaparambu were the other boats.
In the ‘iruttukuthi catregory,’ the Mamoodan boat captioned by B. Victor and sponsored by Nenmeni East ward of the Munroethuruthu panchayat came first. Padakuthira, captioned by Reji A. and sponsored by Central Boat Club, Kallada, came second.
In the ‘veppu category,’ the boat Punnathravengadi sponsored by Pattyamthuruthu Boat Club came first and Jaishot sponsored by Gurudeva Boat Club came second.
Inaugurating the festival, Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the government had cleared construction of a permanent pavilion at the Kallada race venue.
He said non-resident Indian industrialists M.A. Yusuf Ali and Ravi Pillai had agreed to fund half the cost of construction.
The remaining half will be borne by the Tourism Department. Mr. Balakrishnan said District Collector A. Shajahan had been directed to prepare a project report on the proposed pavilion.
The government will come out with a calendar on boat races and water festivals in the State in the interest of tourists, the Minister said.
In his presidential address, Minister for Culture M.A. Baby said a registered society will organize the Kallada boat race from the coming year.
